Evening Panel Confirmed! How to Influence Voters and Win Elections
Tuesday, October 25, 2011, 6 to 8 p.m., Marriott Downtown Toronto Eaton Centre, 525 Bay Street, Toronto
As Torontonians head into their third election in a year, it feels like we have been bombarded with partisan messages. Communicators played an important role in managing these election campaigns, shaping the news agenda while positioning party and candidate. Grass roots advocacy, social media engagement and TV ads were just some of the tactics employed by campaign managers to reach voters and influencers.
In an evening panel discussion, IABC/Toronto brings together seasoned campaign managers and communicators to share lessons learned from the election season. In this session, attendees will learn:
- Strategies for successful political campaigns as well as do’s and don’ts
- Impact of social media and the 24hr news cycle on message development and distribution
- Creating a personality brand versus the party brand
- Lessons learned from the October 6th provincial election
Panelists:
- Mark Blevis, Digital Public Affairs Strategist
- Katie Telford, Senior Consultant, StrategyCorp
- Dan Robertson, Vice President, Crestview Strategy
Registration Fees*:

- $50: IABC Regular member ($56.50 with HST)
- $30: IABC Student/Transitional member ($33.90 with HST)
- $60: Non-member ($67.80 with HST)
*Admission, networking and refreshments included in registration fee.

October 19th Munch ‘n’ Mingle – Date is the Same, Only Venue Has Changed!
Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 6 to 8:30 p.m., The Pilot, 22 Cumberland Street, Toronto
PLEASE NOTE VENUE CHANGE: Event to be held at The Pilot, not the Bedford Academy
Fall is officially here and it’s time for the first Munch ‘n’ Mingle of the IABC/Toronto calendar year. Take a break from your busy workweek – and the chill in the air – and get on-board for some good food and warm company at the historic Pilot pub, 22 Cumberland, in Toronto’s Yorkville area.
We’ll be meeting in the Stealth Lounge, located on the second floor of this well-known and historic Toronto hangout – heavily frequented by the advertising and trendsetting crowds – and which came highly recommended by many of you.
The Munch ‘n’ Mingle promises to be a great evening and a good chance to socialize – and network – with new faces, and see some old ones as well! There will be plenty of food – both pub-style and some lighter fare – so you won’t leave hungry. Each attendee will receive two drink tickets instead of the usual one, and you can choose from the Pilot’s wide selection of beer and spirits, or house red and white wine offerings.
Don’t forget to mark the date – and the venue – on your calendar and register soon. The Early Bird special ends October 5th, so you only have two days left to take advantage of this special price, and the opportunity to be registered in a draw to win two free tickets to the next Munch ‘n’ Mingle.
Event costs are as follows:
- $30: IABC Member early bird ($33.90 with HST) – ends October 5, 2011
- $30: IABC Student/Transitional member ($33.90 with HST)
- $35: IABC Regular member ($39.55 with HST)
- $40: Non-member ($45.20 with HST)

Over 150 students attended the presentations and we are pleased that so many have already registered and taken part in special events like volunteer recruitment night.
On behalf of IABC/Toronto, Menka Walia, Manager, Student Relations would like to extend congratulations to the following Humber students who were lucky recipients of Starbucks gift cards:
Marisa Corazzola
Blair Jones
Maleah Sparks
Humber student Blair Jones had this to say about the presentation Melissa Gibson, Director of Membership, gave “Thank-you for doing a wonderful job presenting IABC to the class. I was initially intimidated by the idea of an internationally-based organization coming to speak with us; however, you were very personable and your presentation was a big help in making our decision between CPRS and IABC an easy one!”
Another Humber student, Mesila Maltezi also expressed thanks to Paulina Callaghan, VP, Membership, "I just wanted to thank you for the presentation you gave this morning at Humber College. It was very intuitive and inspired me to check out IABC and inquire about membership! You did an excellent job! Thank you for your time and once again, thank you for your presentation!"
