It’s a new year at IABC/Toronto: help us help you

Welcome to a new year at IABC/Toronto! I’m excited to be President of the chapter for 2010/2011. To get things started, I’ll ask you the same questions that I asked members at our annual general meeting in late June: why did you join IABC/Toronto and why do you stay? It’s something that I’ve been thinking about as the Board begins to work on a new three-year strategy. What motivates some members to get involved? What would engage inactive members?

Although we have a group of talented, hard-working volunteers leading programs and initiatives in the chapter, we need members to contribute. We know that effective communication is a two-way exchange of ideas. The same goes for IABC/Toronto. Tell us what matters to you. Tell us what you value from your membership – or what you would value if it were available. Then get involved and help make it happen! Together, we can create a rewarding experience.

Send your ideas and feedback to us – now, or anytime throughout the year.

If you are a senior communication manager in a corporation or non-profit organization, the IABC Research Foundation is hoping you can spare 15 minutes of your time to participate in a web-based survey. This research effort is part of an IABC-sponsored (funded in part by IABC/Toronto) project studying the structure of the communication department and its relationship to organizational processes. After conducting 25 qualitative interviews, the team of researchers led by Prof. Krishnamurthy Sriramesh (Massey University, New Zealand) and Mr. Fraser Likely (CEO of Likely Strategies, Ottawa, Canada) have developed a survey questionnaire. The Impact of HST on the cost of IABC/Toronto offerings

As most of you know, effective July 1, 2010, the province of Ontario harmonized its Provincial Sales Tax (PST) with the Federal Goods and Services Tax (GST). The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) will be applied at a rate of 13% – consisting of a 5% federal component and an 8% provincial component. While IABC/Toronto has always collected GST on events and services, starting July 1 members will pay an additional 8% in taxes (the provincial component of HST).

Providing value to our members and striking a balance between reasonable prices and sound financial planning is important to the IABC/Toronto Board. Be assured of our continued commitment in offering you services that are affordable and accessible.

It’s getting close to “last call” for this year’s MC nominations! Just 20 days left to prepare a nomination

Deadline: August 13, 2010

Friendly reminder -- Don’t forget to leave a little extra time before the Aug. 13 deadline.  The member you’re nominating needs to sign off on the final package.

Full details at: http://canada.iabc.com/awards/master-communicator/

Many IABC leaders went on to receive the MC distinction because a Master Communicator took the time to identify, assess and prepare an impressive nomination package. Here’s to the same happening this year.

How can you quickly track down potential nominees?

  1. Contact your local chapter president
  2. Quickly scan IABC’s online international membership directory, note who is accredited and focus on those with 10-plus years of experience.

Keep in mind these exceptions – similar to the Fellows program:

  • Members currently serving on a regional board (e.g. Canada West Region or Canada East Region), and/or
  • Members who have served on IABCs international executive board within the past two years, including regional chairs, directors-at-large and officers of IABC (e.g. chair, treasurer, etc.)
If you’ve got a potential nominee in mind, why not discuss co-preparing a submission with another MC? Then, the two of you can share preparing the nomination submission.
