What a fabulous way to celebrate the exceptional work of communications professionals over the past year! On Thursday May 28th, IABC/Toronto celebrated the 2009 OVATION Awards at The Liberty Grand in Toronto.

ovation2009As a new member to IABC/Toronto and a first time volunteer at the awards, I was inspired by the talent and support for one another’s achievements. The event honoured a diverse group of communications professionals from agencies, corporations, government and the not-for-profit sector from across the Greater Toronto Area. The theme “Word Gets Around” was perfect for the occasion and describes exactly what communications is all about – being heard in a sea of competing information. Guests enjoyed a fantastic menu, tasty cocktails and an entertaining host.

Louise Karch, acclaimed speaker and workplace expert, did a wonderful job as emcee as she stepped into the role at the last minute. She kept the audience engaged and the evening’s agenda moving forward. Senior IABC/Toronto member and IABC/Toronto Past President Eric Bergman, APR, ABC, MC, was the evening’s main presenter. His passion for communications was clear as he presented the first awards of the evening to some well deserved candidates including Strategic Objectives, Barrick Gold Corporation and Toronto Hydro-Electric System to name a few. Toronto Hydro-Electric System also received the surprise award of the evening, the People’s Choice Award, as voted on by the IABC/Toronto membership. ovation2009_2One of the most memorable moments of the evening was the presentation of the Bobbie Resnick Philanthropy Award, as Bobbie Resnick presented the award to APEX Public Relations. Louise said it best when she highlighted how everyone in the room gave Bobbie their full attention due to her undeniable presence and charisma.

I was thrilled to be a part of this year’s festivities and to work with such devoted and hard-working volunteers. This was an experience I look forward to taking part in again next year. The event was a success from beginning to end with several guests continuing their celebrations after the event had wrapped up. Here’s to another year of exceptional work and celebrated successes!
