Jan. 8, 2011 - IABC volunteers and members fondly remember Roger Feather. Even if you never knew Roger Feather, what he stood for speaks volumes about what it is to be a communicator. He pioneered many communication paths including launching Centennial’s corporate communication program 30 years ago. He tirelessly advocated for how communication contributes to organizational success. He happily mentored the next generation of communicators. He quickly spoke up when changes were needed.

Roger Feather, ABC, MC IABC International Chairman’s Award: 1986

“Roger Feather was a major force during my early career,” said Annette Martell, ABC, MC, Fellow and former IABC world chair. “He made time for emerging leaders. He challenged us to keep learning. He tackled tall projects – always inviting you to join him. He spoke frankly about tough business issues. He worked tirelessly to advance communication. His life and legacy touched many of us.”

One of these was Chris Bunting, ABC, MC, Fellow and also a former IABC world chair. “Roger Feather was a quiet, thoughtful and effective man,” Chris writes. “He was one of a small handful of people who established and nurtured IABC’s Toronto chapter, which for many years now has been the largest chapter in the IABC worldwide network. He was also instrumental in building IABC’s presence in Canada.

“Roger was very committed to the Association and the potential he saw there for more almost four decades. A man of letters and a talented and respected business communicator, Roger Feather was recognized and honoured by his many friends and admirers at IABC over the years, including the prestigious Chairman’s Award, which he received in 1986. Roger did not seek the limelight, but he took great pleasure in quietly and effectively getting things done, serving as a loyal mentor and friend to those he met along the way.”

Gary Schlee, ABC, a past president of IABC/Toronto, doubts anyone else has had such a profound effect on so many Canadian communicators. “If you were starting your corporate communications career in the 1970s or 80s, odds are you encountered Roger. He was remarkably giving of his time and experience. I certainly value the opportunities I had to share in discussions with him. Roger was a catalyst in developing Canada’s first corporate communication program, at Centennial College. As the program’s first faculty member, I benefited from ongoing contributions from Roger once it was underway.

“As a colleague on IABC’s Canada district board, I saw firsthand how earnestly Roger worked towards creating an IABC chapter in London. He was also one of Canada’s first Accredited Business Communicators. The fact is, Roger valued effective communication and helped ensure we would all appreciate its importance.”

IABC International will be increasing dues for Canadian members by approximately $45/year, to the tier “A” level, effective January 1, 2011.

The regions of IABC are rated on a worldwide scale of tiers, using a global benchmark known as the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, which assesses a person’s annual earnings in relation to the cost of goods across countries (i.e. how much it costs to buy milk in Tanzania versus in Toronto). This helps International assess in which tier of dues each region belongs. While Canada has belonged to tier “B” for many years, a recent reassessment of our country (and many others across the globe) has shown that our GNI per capita is equivalent to tier “A” countries (like the United States). Canada will be moved to tier “A” status effective January 1, 2011. As a wealthy country that is comparable in GNI to the U.S., this decision makes business sense for IABC. As well, Canada has not seen a dues increase since 2002.

We encourage you to take advantage of current membership rates and renew/join before December 31, 2010. Additionally, all Canadian members can save about $25 by paying in U.S. dollars, depending on the day’s exchange rate. To pay in U.S. funds, members must call or fax International to renew their memberships instead of using the online form.

Finally, members are encouraged to use the quarterly payment plan. Memberships renewed by December 31, 2010, will be billed in four payments at the current rates.

For more information, please visit www.iabc.com or contact membership-toronto@iabc.com

NEWS RELEASE
For immediate release

IABC/Canada survey sheds light on market for professional communicators

October 19, 2010 – IABC/Canada recently released to members the results of the 2009 IABC/Canada Salary Survey of communication professionals. The survey, conducted by Leger Marketing for IABC/Canada West, IABC/Canada East and IABC/Toronto between December 2009 and February 2010, asked professional communicators key questions about income, benefits, employment and job satisfaction in today’s economy.

“We are thrilled to see the high level of job satisfaction among communication professionals in Canada and the tangible value of IABC membership and accreditation,” said Felicia Shiu, ABC*, APR**, the lead volunteer on the project and past president of IABC/Toronto. “For years we’ve believed in the value of IABC membership and professional accreditation; now we have the stats to fully appreciate it. In Canada, IABC members earn 15% more, on average, than non-members, and accredited professionals earn 21% more, on average, than non-accredited communicators.”

KEY SURVEY FINDINGS:

Salary Levels

The average base salary for professional communicators in Canada has increased five per cent since 2006 and 26% since 2003. Fifty-seven per cent of respondents reported an increase in salary over the past year. Thirteen per cent of respondents indicated an increase of 10% or more.

IABC members make 15% more, on average, than non-IABC members.

Males reported average salaries 28% higher than those reported by females.

Thirty-three per cent of communicators expect a three to five percent pay increase at their next pay review. Twenty-two per cent expect an increase up to two per cent, and six per cent expect a six to eight per cent increase. Twelve per cent did not expect any pay increase due to the economic situation.

Eighteen per cent of communicators surveyed indicated they were professionally accredited*. Accredited professionals tend to have an average salary 21% higher than those who aren’t accredited. There are currently 306 ABCs in Canada, who represent 40% of ABCs around the world.

Job Security, Performance and Downsizing

Most respondents (74%) agree that their company has downsized as a result of the current economic situation. Interestingly, professionally accredited individuals are statistically more likely to agree with this statement when compared to individuals who are not accredited (91% vs. 70%, respectively).

Few communicators (13%) believe their job is in jeopardy because of current economic conditions.

Six in 10 are feeling more pressure to perform at work than they did six months ago—especially those who have been in the PR/Communications industry for five years or more (62% vs. 53% among those who have been working in the industry for less than five years) and those who have been working for their current organization for three or more years (66% vs. 55% among those who have been working at their current organization for less than three years).

Thirty-five per cent of professional communicators are willing to take a pay cut or have their salary frozen in order to ensure job security over the next year. This is particularly true among those who have been in the PR/Communications field for 10 or more years (38% vs. 28% among those who have been in the field for less than five years) and among those who have been with their current organization for three or more years (39% vs. 30% among those who have been with their current organization for less than three years).

Sixty-six per cent reported they have not been promoted in the past 12 months.

Job Seeking

Twenty-seven per cent of respondents reported they were job seeking and 23% percent were thinking of job seeking. For those who were seeking a job, 56% were somewhat willing to relocate with 12% saying they were strongly willing to relocate.

Most respondents (65%) indicated that the minimum percentage pay raise needed to leave their current job ranges between less than five per cent and 20%.

The most frequently specified non-financial incentive to leave the respondent’s current job was “more interesting work or more challenged” (54%), which was closely followed by “opportunities for advancement” (51%).

Job Satisfaction

Overall, most professional communicators in Canada (63%) are satisfied with the current salary level for their job. This is especially true among executive VPs and owners (77% and 73%, respectively) and least true among coordinators (43%), officers (46%) and account executives (33%).

Most respondents indicated that despite the economy, they remain committed to a career in Public Relations or Communications and find it rewarding (85% and 83%, respectively).

Complete survey results and salary figures are available to IABC members at http://canada.iabc.com. Media may contact IABC/Canada or IABC/Toronto to obtain full results, including stats specific to the Toronto job market.

Ottawa, Ontario: – June 14, 2010 – Canadian members of IABC collected 24 Gold Quill Awards at the ceremony in Toronto on June 7, 2010, including all of the student awards!

“I am delighted for the winners of the Gold Quill,” said IABC Canada East President, Alix Edmiston, ABC*. “It is a true honour to have your work recognized internationally and to have it held up as an example of excellence that others can learn from. Canadians are known for their talent in communications and I’m not surprised that we had so many winners this year.”

The Gold Quill Awards Committee received more than 900 applications from 28 countries. One hundred and six submissions were selected to receive awards: 32 Awards of Excellence, 71 Awards of Merit and three student awards. All three student awards were collected by Canadians– two from Royal Roads University in Victoria and one from Grant McEwan University in Edmonton.

“Canadian students are leading the pack! We are extremely pleased that they have done so well at Gold Quill this year,” said Brandy Delves, Chair of the Canada Western Region. “Their accomplishments are a testament to the strong education system in Canada, the quality of practitioners around them, and of course, their own hard work. They represent the next generation of top notch practitioners coming from Canada.”
