I hadn’t been to a face-to-face IABC/Toronto meeting in years. In fact, I had an endless list of excuses for not attending:
- The downtown meeting venue is too far
- I’m too busy
- I specialize in a different area than everyone else
- I look terrible today
- The topics of discussion won’t be interesting
- I won’t know anyone
I’m sure you get the gist.
Then, after a refreshing summer, I regained perspective. I remembered that you get what you give.
I took a leap. I attended an event.
Folks were incredibly welcoming. I met people who worked at companies I used to work with and want to work with. I met people I had only admired from afar. I had conversations about the evolution and future of communications. I shared some of my ideas, learnings, and struggles, and my new friends shared theirs. I let my guard down. I laughed and laughed.
I left energized and determined to attend other events. Maybe even with one of my writer friends! Will you take a leap and join me? I hope so.
